English: This foundation stone was originally planned to be laid by Mrs Katharine Burkill. However, illness prevented her from attending the ceremony. The stone was finally laid by her husband, Mr A. W. Burkill. The following is inscribed on the stone: -
This foundation stone was laid on 20th May 1933 by Mrs Katharine Burkill and commemorates the demolition of the original grand stand erected in 1863 and the erection of this building. |
