生存还是毁灭

“生存还是毁灭”(英語:To be, or not to be),是莎士比亞戲剧作品《哈姆雷特》第三幕第一場,哈姆雷特王子一段獨白的第一句前半部,很多人也會用這句來指整段獨白。在王子的演讲中,他考虑了死亡与自杀,哀叹这痛苦又不公的生活,也承认另一种选择可能会更糟。这段开场白是世界文學、戏剧与音乐作品中常見被引用的一句,整句是:「生存还是毁灭,这是一个值得考虑的问题」(To be or not to be, that is the question)。

- To be, or not to be, that is the question:
- Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
- The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
- Or to take Arms against a Sea of troubles,
- And by opposing end them: to die, to sleep
- No more; and by a sleep, to say we end
- The heart-ache, and the thousand natural shocks
- That Flesh is heir to? 'Tis a consummation
- Devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep,
- To sleep, perchance to Dream; aye, there's the rub,
- For in that sleep of death, what dreams may come,
- When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
- Must give us pause. There's the respect
- That makes Calamity of so long life:
- For who would bear the Whips and Scorns of time,
- The Oppressor's wrong, the proud man's Contumely,
- The pangs of dispised Love, the Law’s delay,
- The insolence of Office, and the spurns
- That patient merit of th'unworthy takes,
- When he himself might his Quietus make
- With a bare Bodkin? Who would Fardels bear, [F: these Fardels]
- To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
- But that the dread of something after death,
- The undiscovered country, from whose bourn
- No traveller returns, puzzles the will,
- And makes us rather bear those ills we have,
- Than fly to others that we know not of?
- Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,
- And thus the native hue of Resolution
- Is sicklied o'er, with the pale cast of Thought,
- And enterprises of great pitch and moment, [F: pith]
- With this regard their Currents turn awry, [F: away]
- And lose the name of Action. Soft you now,
- The fair Ophelia? Nymph, in thy Orisons

第一四开本(Q1, 1603)是哈姆雷特最早的版本,但被认为是剧院演出时抄写的山寨版,而非剧作早期的草稿(因此被称为"坏四开本");Q1的某些地方确实和通行文本相符,但是在"生存还是毁灭"一段中问题颇多。例如行文中用"Hope"代替"dread",与通行文本的意思大相径庭。此处的单词同样以现代正字法拼写。
