English: This is the Unisphere located in Flushing Meadow Park. The Unisphere was constructed as the symbol of the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair. The symbol of the Fair was “Peace Through Understanding.” It also represents global interdependence and dedicated to “Man’s Achievements on a Shrinking Globe in an Expanding Universe.” The Unisphere is in the center of a large, circular reflecting pool to give the effect that the Unisphere is floating in space. Lastly, there are three orbit rings that encircle the Unisphere at various angles. One of the rings represents the route of Yuri Gagarin, the first man that circles the Earth in space. Another is to represents the track of John Glenn, the first American that circles the Earth in space. Lastly, is the orbit of Telstar, the first active communications satellite. Originally, they had plan to create a ring for every satellite that was already in space, but that was proven to be impractical, therefore, they decided to chose the symbolic number three. |
