English: A 5th- or 6th-century knotted wool carpet discovered at Sampul, Lop, Sinkiang believed to be depicting a a part of the Story of Gilgamesh. Historically, Sinkiang was a part of the Kingdom of Khotan which was founded by the Scythians/Saka. It is possible that the Story of Gilgamesh transferred down through the Scythian people. Duan Qing at Peking University identifies the depiction as relating to Gilgamesh (Across-Regional and Local Characteristics of Mythologies: On the Basis of Observing the Lop Museum Carpets). One other theory proposed by Zhang He is that they may depict Krishna instead (Krsna Iconography in Khotan Carpets: Spread of Hindu Religious Ideas in Xinjiang, China, Fourth–Seventh Centuries CE).
