Definitions of cities in China

Hello, at the talk page of the Asian Month I raised the issue of definition of cities in China: de:Wikipedia Diskussion:Asiatischer Monat 2022 http://www.stats.gov.cn/statsinfo/auto2073/201310/t20131031_450613.html, a dead link, apparently said Urban area refers to the neighborhood committees and other areas that are connected to the actual construction of municipal districts and cities without districts, districts and municipal government resident. Encyclopedia Britannica 2003 Book of the year, p. 785 has the following population figures (exluding agricultural population within city limits) for 1999:

• Anqiu 193,258
• Beining 101,273
• Changchun 2,072,324
• Chengdu 2,146,126
• Fushun 1,271,113

The columns with 2010 population figures available at https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/中華人民共和國城市人口排名 are, according to the translation programme referring to: 1. column:地区人口 (regional population): 地级行政区 (prefecture-level administrative region) 2. column:市辖区人口 (city area population): 市辖区 (City area) composed of 县级市 (county-level cities) 3. 城镇人口 (Urban population): City area without 乡村人口 (rural population) The respective population numbers under 1. 2. and 3. of the above cities are:

• Changchun 7,674,439 4,193,073 3,411,209
• Chengdu 14,047,625 7,415,590 6,316,922
• Fushun 2,138,090 1,431,014 1,318,808

https://www.beijingcitylab.com/projects-1/4-population-china/ says: We focus on the basic building block of a city proper in China: Jiedao (sub-districts).

• Xīn'ān Jiēdào, 139,524
• Xīng'ān Jiēdào, 224,684

• https://www.citypopulation.de/en/china/townships/jinzhou/210782__b%C4%95izh%C3%A8n_sh%C3%AC/ has Beizhen County-level city with the 2010 urban subdistricts:

• Guānyīngé Jiēdào, 2,755

In the two years where https://www.citypopulation.de/en/china/liaoning/admin/2104__f%C5%ADsh%C3%B9n_sh%C3%AC/ provides population figures for all districts of Fushun, there were in total for the districts 1,491,182 for 2010 and 1,322,098 for 2020.

• https://www.citypopulation.de/en/china/sichuan/admin/5101__ch%C3%A9ngd%C5%AB_sh%C3%AC/ has as a sum of the districts of Chengdu

for the 2000, 2010 and 2020 censuses were 6,923,336, 9,893,881 and 15,419,445 respectively.

• https://www.citypopulation.de/en/china/jilin/admin/2201__ch%C3%A1ngch%C5%ABn_sh%C3%AC/ has, as the sum of the districts

of Changchun for the 2000, 2010 and 2020 censuses as 4,184,913, 4,804,743 and 8,712,524 respectively.

I'm sorry that I am not sure what you would like to ask or confirm. You said on dewiki: "[G]ibt es für die selbe Stadt die Verwaltungseinheit und auch andere Definitionen derselben Stadt" (DeepL translated as "There are for the same city the administrative unit and also other definitions of the same city") I don't think I understand what the sentence mean. • The first list has defined the cities as exluding agricultural population within city limits.
• The second list has the same cities with three definitions from https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/中華人民共和國城市人口排名

Are cities defined by their administrative area only or otherwise?
